Winter can apply to anyone who is going through a cold season in their lives, an uncomfortable, depressing and gloomy time. It’s an occasion of going against, what feels like, snow, ice and wind. This period can be severe, mild, long or short, but it will come. This description applies to everyone. All people go through cold seasons.
Winter was created for a reason. God had a plan for all seasons. Most people can rattle off the disadvantages of winter. Let’s be enlightened on the advantages of winter:
- Draws people closer together
- Kills some insects and pests
- Destroys certain pollens
- Creates cleaner, fresher air
- Brings upon a time of rest and reflection
- Helps to appreciate warmer days
- Hydrates and insulates the soil
Whether you acknowledge it or not, the same principle applies to troubled times.
Why do troubled times exist? There is an infinite amount of reasons why we go through bad times. Some of these, wintery times are brought upon due to selfish actions, disobedience, stubbornness and pride. One thing that needs to be clear, a type of reasoning many people do not want to grasp. If you think because you are serving God and doing all the things that He has commanded you to do, that no afflictions or trials will come your way—you are wrong! There is an enemy in this world, the devil. His purpose is to rob you of your peace and to prevent you from having a purposeful, joyous and prosperous life.
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly John 10:10 (KJV)
During these wintery mixes of life, turn to God. True believers know God can deliver you, from any troubled time. God wants to be involved in all areas of our lives when times are good and bad.
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 New King James Version (NKJV)
The advantages of winter seasons in our lives:
- Draws people closer to God. During the cold season, we pray and meditate more on God’s Word, wisdom and His way.
- Kills stubbornness and disobedience. We become yielding and obedient to the directions of God.
- Destroys pride. We become humble, having a contrite spirit when these times are upon us.
- Creates a cleaner, fresher person. After the difficult period, we are restored, anew. Gold is purified by fire. We are purified by afflictions.
- Brings upon a time of rest. We learn to come into God’s rest and not into self-works and self-efforts. It’s a time of reflection, to look back and remember the times when God brought us out of previous trials.
- Helps us to be appreciative. When the trial is over, we become more grateful than before. As spring follows the winter, joy follows sorrow.
- Hydrates our hearts with God’s love and insulates us with His protection.
No one wants to go through a cold season, but they will come. Remember, it is not the troubled season that occurs, it is always how you react to it. Learn to react to the winter with God’s overcoat of grace, boots of faith, gloves of prayer, wearing God’s Hat of love. Be winterized with God.
Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him. Psalm 91:14-15King James Version (KJV)
